A member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Support Unit was attacked and robbed of his gun in Zvishavane on Monday.
According to police papers, it is alleged a cop only identified as constable Mhlanga was attacked around 04:00 hours in the head by three men who were armed with machetes and robbed him of his gun at a school he and his colleague, constable Munetsi, were guarding.
The members of the Police Support Unit are part of the group that has been deployed country wide to provide security for the Zimbabwe Schools Examinations Council exam papers.
Munetsi is said to have been attacked with the butt of the riffle and fell down prompting the assailants to flee into the dark.
The cops managed to inform Zvishavane police who acted swiftly and found the stolen gun four miles away from the crime scene and all rounds of ammunition where accounted for.
Meanwhile an AK-47 riffle that was said to have been robbed from another cop in Mt Darwin was found in a bus belonging to M.C.J coaches at Mbare bus terminus. The weapon was surrendered to Matapi police station by the bus operators after all passengers from Mt Darwin had disembarked.
There is an atmosphere of fear and panic amongst members of the Support Unit and there is a lot of speculating and many have been left wondering as to the motive behind these attacks because the guns and ammunition rounds are being recovered intact.
A cop who declined to be named suspects foul play by elements who want to bring the name of the force into disrepute. The source could not be drawn into naming the alleged hidden hand.
