A BRAZEN Lupane man who axed a neighbour whom he suspected of sleeping with his wife has been, convicted of the crime.
37-year-old Collet Sibanda of Singeni kraal in Lupane was recently convicted on his own plea of guilt by magistrate Mr Takurida Gwazemba.
He was slapped with six months imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence.
The State, led by prosecutor Mr Tawanda Tsatsa proved to the court that on New Year's Day, the complainant, Mr Lwazi Cele (38), who resides at a neighbouring village, was hanging out with colleagues at a local bottle store in celebration of the day.
Mr Cele, in a celebratory mood, proceeded to the stage where he started dancing.
Mr Tsatsa also proved that it was then that the accused, like a lion hunting its prey stormed the venue wielding an axe.
Soon after that he pounced on Mr Cele and struck him once on the back and once on the head before repeatedly axing him all over the body.
It is said fellow imbibers, realizing the horrific incident, suddenly stormed, out of the store fearing for their lives.
The axe-wielding Sibanda had to be restrained from further harming the complainant who was already bleeding profusely by the wife of the owner of the bottle store.
Having been left off the hook the complainant fled the scene in a dramatic incident that left many shell shocked.
On being asked by Mr Gwazemba why he committed such a horrendous crime, the convict claimed the complainant was always going behind his back sleeping with his wife.
"He angered me because a lot of times he slept with my wife. I also found out that I was HIV positive yet I knew that. I was negative," said the convict.
Due to the assault, the complainant had to be ferried to Mpilo hospital for treatment.
