A 38-year-old man, Tabona Ndlovu from village 13, Dombodema (Plumtree), under headman Khesari Nkomo, was heavily assaulted and struck with an axe by other villagers for allegedly turning down their demand for a free scotch cart ride back to their respective homesteads from local shopping centre.

The matter came to light this Tuesday when Christopher Nleya (21) and Honest Ndlovu (18) appeared before Plumtree magistrate, Mr Joshua Nembaware, who remanded them in custody to September 11, 2025, facing assault charges as defined in section 89(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (codification and reform act) chapter 09:23.

The state led by Sheila Nyathi alleged that on August 28, 2025, at around 18:00 hours, the complainant was coming from local shops whilst in his ox-drawn scotch cart, whereupon he met Nleya and Ndlovu (accused) who asked him for boarding (riding into the cart) transport to village 13.

The complainant refused to grant them permission to board the scotch cart since the accused were already nearer to their final destination (village 13). This did not go down well with the two accused who proceeded to forcibly board into the scotch cart.

Instead of heading to village 13, the complainant, however, went to another village where he delivered a bag of cement he was carrying in his scotch cart. Upon seeing that the complainant was no longer going to village 13, the accused tackle the complainant who then fell down and they struck him (complainant) with an axe on his left leg where he sustained a deep a deep cut.

The matter was reported to the police leading to Nleya and Ndlovu's arrest.
