POLICE have released the names of the eight people who died on Monday when a Toyota Regius veered off the road and overturned along the Gwanda-Bulawayo highway.
National traffic acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said the driver of the vehicle that was travelling to Bulawayo was still battling for life at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) with two other passengers.
"The victims are Thulani Fungu (36), Mthandazo Ndlovu (34), Mike Moyo (40), Fundile Ngwenya (27), Getrude Mudembe (31), Nobuhle Musumba (26) and Mlindeli Sibanda (36).
"There is still one female victim who has not been identified and is aged about 40 years," said Asst Insp Chakanza.
He could not release the addresses of the deceased and appealed to members of the public to come forward and identify the remaining victim.
"The driver is still in a critical condition while the two passengers are in a serious condition," said Asst Insp Chakanza.
He said members of the public should desist from boarding private vehicles.
"People should stop boarding these small cars because most of the time they are overloaded," said Asst Insp Chakanza.
The Bulawayo bound vehicle overturned at the 13km-peg killing seven people on the spot while the other one died on the way to UBH.
Nine people survived the accident.
The police suspect that the left rear tyre of the vehicle burst resulting in it overturning.
