A 45-YEAR-OLD woman has admitted to scalding her 14-year-old daughter with boiling water as punishment for bedding a 32-year-old school teacher from Mangwe District.
The woman from Empandeni Village grabbed a tin of boiling water from a fire and poured its contents on her daughter's chest causing her severe burns. She was hospitalised for one week at Plumtree District Hospital following the vicious attack by her mother last month.
Her mother, who is expected to appear in court on December 11 facing physical abuse charges, said she was angered by her daughter's irresponsibility.
She said the affair between a teacher, Celestine Matsika, and her daughter was the reason for the incident. "I became very angry when I learnt that my daughter was in a relationship with a man who is twice her age.
"This man has been taking advantage of my daughter all this time and he has been sleeping with her. What kind of man would sleep with such a young child anyway? The man is her former teacher," she said.
She said Matsika, who teaches at Kwite Primary School, should have been exemplary.
She said a man of Matsika's age and behaviour was likely to be in sexual relationships with different women, adding she feared he could infect her daughter with a disease.
The suspect said she sent her daughter to run an errand at the school on November 7 but instead the 14-year-old girl proceeded to her lover's home.
She said she later learnt that her daughter was at the teacher's house and instructed the girl's uncle, Zwelithini Vundla, to fetch her.
She said she was very angry and ordered her daughter to spend that night at her grandmother's homestead. "On the following morning I went to my mother's homestead to confront my daughter since I had cooled down overnight. My temper rose again during the confrontation when she told me that she had slept with the teacher on several occasions without using protection," she said.
She said she grabbed a tin of boiling water from the fire and poured it onto her daughter as a way of disciplining her, adding that she later regretted the severity of her actions.
She said she tried to compensate for her actions by sending her daughter to hospital and paying her medical expenses.
The 14-year-old girl said her lover, who teaches at the school where she learnt, proposed love to her last year and they started sleeping together early this year.
She said she took the opportunity when her mother sent her on errands to visit her former teacher at the school where they had sex.
