A Victoria Falls woman is nursing her wounds after a bid to hang herself on a mango tree failed when the tree branch broke resulting in her falling and getting severely injured in the process.
Celesile Sibanda, 35, of house number 2500 Mkosana Township, had to be rescued by police officers on patrol who found her groaning under the mango tree branch with a wire around her neck.
The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday last week.
It is alleged that Sibanda could neither walk nor remove the wire from her neck as she had sustained injuries on her arms and legs because of the fall.
A police source who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the incident.
The police officer said Sibanda was taken to Chinotimba Hospital where she was detained for medical observation.
"It's true our team on routine patrol picked Celesile Sibanda. She had a wire around her neck and was crying while underneath a mango tree branch," said the source.
Sibanda, who was still under emotional stress and sobbing, confirmed the incident and blamed her conduct on an evil spell cast upon her by her live-in boyfriend.
"Yes, I attempted to kill myself but the tree branch broke down. Police officers on patrol saved me when they took me to hospital where I was also counselled. My husband refused to take part in the counselling session.
"I was at my parents' home when my husband came and demanded our house keys. He took them and went away. After a shot while, I went to Chamabondo School to see a friend.
"On my way back, I met my husband who accused me of infidelity. There was a boy walking behind me. I think that's what made him suspect me," she said.
Sibanda said her boyfriend hurled insults at her.
She said when she got home her boyfriend started sending several Whatsapp messages including pictures of his late brother in a mortuary being embalmed.
"I'm sure that the sending of the pictures of a dead person is what cast a spell on me. It was at that time that I then went to the mango tree and tried to hang myself," said Sibanda.
Busha Sibanda, a brother-in-law to Celesile expressed shock at his sister-in-law's attempt to terminate her life.
"I was with Celesile when she received a threatening call from her husband. I'm shocked that eventually she attempted to kill herself. I never thought that it would get to this," he said.
The live-in boyfriend, Benard Dube, could not be reached for comment as his phone was continuously unreachable.
