AN umalayitsha based in South Africa raped a 13-year-old girl that he was assigned to deliver to her rural home in Bulilima District from the neighbouring country and the juvenile's grandparents concealed the offence.
Unity Tshuma (29) was taking the girl to her grandparents' home in Zuzaphi Village last year after assisting her to illegally enter the country when he committed the offence.
Upon her return the juvenile reported the matter to her 94-year-old grandfather who advised her to remain quiet about the incident.
The juvenile followed the order but five months later she visited an aunt who lives in Bulawayo who noticed that her niece was pregnant.
She took the girl to a clinic where she revealed that she had been raped by Tshuma.
Tshuma appeared before Plumtree magistrate Mr Gideon Ruvetsa on initial remand facing rape charges. He was remanded out of custody to 12 February after he was freed on $100 bail.
Prosecuting, Mr Clemence Shawarira said Tshuma raped the girl on a date unknown to the State but in April.
He said the complainant was supposed to meet her grandparent's maid who is also the accused person's cousin, Etheline Sibanda (25) at the accused person's homestead which is in their area.
"As they were proceeding home the accused person followed them and had a chat with Sibanda. He then ran up to the juvenile who was already ahead of them and dragged her to a bushy area," said Mr Shawarira.
Sibanda upon realising that her cousin had grabbed the juvenile ran away and left the girl at the man's mercy.
Mr Shawarira said Tshuma produced a screw driver and threatened to stab the complainant if she made noise and he raped her once.
He said the complainant proceeded home where she told her grandfather who did not take any action but rather warned her against reporting the matter.
"In September the complainant went to live with her aunt in Bulawayo since she was no longer attending school.
"Her aunt realised a change in her niece's body and took her to a nearby clinic where she reported that she was raped," said Mr Shawarira.
He said upon being examined at Mpilo Central Hospital it was discovered that the juvenile was five months pregnant.
He said a report was made to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person.
