A JAMBEZI man who raped his 95-year-old grandmother on numerous occasions shocked the courts on Friday when he claimed that she had proposed love before begging him to engaged in sex with her.
The man (32) from a village in Mbizha in Jambezi, left the court speechless when he claimed that his grandmother had begged him for sex.
"Your worship, I did not rape my grandmother but she asked me to engage in sex with her after proposing love to me saying that she had been alone for a long time following the death of my grandfather. When I refused she literally begged me saying she felt she could still perform like a young woman regardless of her age. I was left with no choice but to help her out seeing that she really wanted sex," he said, when he appeared before Hwange regional magistrate Mr Dambudzo Malunga facing three counts of rape.
The court heard that between 1 June and 5 July this year, the man went to his grandmother's homestead during the night and made his way into her bedroom where she was sleeping.
Surprised at the sudden appearance of her grandson, she inquired on what the matter was, he did not respond but instead lifted her before raping her once.
After the act, he fled the scene.
The grandmother informed her younger sister of the rape but did not reveal the identity of the perpetrator.
Sometime during the same month the grandson raped the old woman again.
However, this time she yelled for help, resulting in his grandson fleeing into the darkness.
Undeterred, he pounced again at around midnight but this time dragged his grandmother into a nearby bush where he undressed and raped her. He threatened to kill her if she told anyone of the rape before leaving her to spend the whole night in the bush.
When villagers found her the next morning, she lied that she had got lost fearing that if she revealed what had transpired her grandson would fulfill his threats.
Prosecuting, Mr Tawanda Sigauke further told the court that sometime in the month of July, the man resurfaced again during the dead of the night, entered his grandmother's bedroom hut and told her that he had come to give her money.
However, before leaving, he informed her that he would return later that night to play their "sex game". Fearing further torture at the hands of her grandson, she immediately sought refuge at her sister's homestead after he had left.
She told her sister that she was avoiding someone who was troubling her. Efforts by the sister to convince her to divulge the identity of the person failed as the old woman chose to remain tightlipped. The next day she returned to her homestead where she found the village head, Aleck Nyoni, to whom she narrated her ordeal at the hands of her grandson.
The village head mobilised other villagers to locate and effect a citizen's arrest on the grandson but failed to find him. A report was made to police in Jambezi who laid an ambush leading to his arrest.
He was found guilty and remanded in custody to 20 July for sentencing.
