A GWANDA man who raped an 81-year-old granny at knife point before shoving sand into her private parts has been sentenced to 12 years in jail.
Mlolozi Nkala, 27, of Chelesa village Glass Block 2 had denied raping the old woman when he was arraigned before regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza.
He was, however, convicted due to overwhelming evidence.
Nkala's version of events differed from his father's testimony whom he had called as his defence witness while state witnesses corroborated each other.
In mitigation, he pleaded with the court to give him a sentence that would enable him to fend for his child when released from jail. Nothing was suspended from the 12- year sentence.
In passing sentence, the magistrate said he had considered that Nkala was a first offender and a single parent to a one year six months old baby.
"This crime was committed in aggravation. You were armed with a knife, you attacked an elderly member of society and the complainant was defenceless. Further what you did is despicable, you had no right to stuff sand in her privates," said Mabeza.
Regional prosecutor, Johannes Tlou said Nkala approached the old woman on May 28 this year.
Nkala grabbed the granny from behind, produced a knife and threatened to stab her if she screamed.
He then ordered her to lie down on her back and she complied.
Nkala then raped her.
The woman tried to free herself but was overpowered and sustained a cut on her hand.
After raping her, Nkala poured some sand on the granny's private parts and threatened to stab her if she tried to scream for help.
He left the scene but was apprehended by some villagers and handed to the police.
