Botswana chides Trump for derogatory claims against Africa

The Botswana government has issued a statement criticising USA president Donald Trump for calling Africa 'shithole countries' due to excessive immigration from the block.

Trump is reported to have made these claims against Africa, El Salvador and Haiti during a meeting with congress members.

South Africa's opposition DA has also expressed their displeasure, Zimbabwe and other SADC countries are yet to make a statement.

"The Ministry of International Affairs and cooperation wishes to inform the public and the international community that the government of Botswana, today summoned the US Ambassador to Botswana to express its displeasure at the alleged utterances made by the President of the US, Donald Trump, when he referred to African countries and others as 'shithole countries' during a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the White House join Thursday 11 January 2018," said Botswana government in a statement.

Botswana says it hosts many American's and views Trump's claims as 'irresponsible, reprehensive and racist.

The Southern African country has called other SADC members to condemn the remarks made by President Trump.

President Trump's claims are set to cause hostility in the international community and further worsen USA's relations with African countries.
