Opposition must call for reforms
2 hrs ago | Views
The unification of Zimbabwe's common people is the only thing that can bring about change in the country. The progress of the struggle has been ruined and hindered by the so-called political gurus who have been involved in politics since the late Morgan Tsvangirayi founded the Movement of Democratic Change.
Instead of improving the lives of the people, who have been suffering under the ruling party's leadership, these politicians came merely to battle for their own interests and personal wealth. People want to modify the practice of placing all their eggs in one basket because they are sick of the same old way of doing things.
It has become suicidal to trust these politicians, and there has been no noticeable improvement.
What is needed right now for the country to move forward is the call for electoral reforms. Any serious political party that wants to lead must first push for these reforms.
Zanu PF is a narcissistic party that is only there to hoard power with no clue on what to do with it.
The party has been riding and taking advantage of the weakness of the opposition in their failure to push for these reforms. Reforms are key and fundamental to holding free and fair elections.
It is not accurate to claim that the ruling party has been winning elections in Zimbabwe; it is the junta that has been calling the shots in Zimbabwean election history. The military interference is a major cause of concern and an albatross to holding free and fair elections in the country.
In my opinion, elections in 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023 were won by the opposition, but Zanu PF, with the aid of the military, forced itself on the populace. It was only in 2000 when the opposition lost an election.
We have witnessed on several occasions the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) failing to conduct elections in a fair manner and being accused of rigging polls.
The staffing of ZEC is also compromised, and the opposition must make sure that the institution is dissolved and recruit staff on merit, not partisanship. The opposition must also make a lot of noise in pushing for the diaspora vote.
Mnangagwa knows that with the diaspora vote he will not make it, hence the resistance. These problems should be confronted by the opposition not using kid's gloves.
Without addressing these issues, Zanu PF will continue doing what it has been doing for the past decades. If it happens that there should be an alliance to wrestle power from the ruling party, there are some forces that should be avoided and not entertained.
Joining forces with people like Morgen Komichi, Sengezo Tshabangu, and Welshman Ncube, who must be retiring from politics now, together with Douglas Mwonzora, will be another political suicide.
These individuals have dismally failed and are only there to fatten their pockets and enrich themselves through the pay checks. They actually lack political capital. Such sellouts must be allowed to retire permanently from politics.
