FELIX Chindungwe has been appointed Highlanders FC captain. He replaces long serving goalkeeper Ariel "Mangoye" Sibanda in a shake up by new coach Bongani Mafu.
Dreadlocked Chindungwe, who joined the club from Chicken Inn last season, will be deputised by long-serving utility player Erick Mudzingwa with Mthulisi Maphosa, who worked together with Mafu while still at the now defunct Zimbabwe Saints, being named the second deputy captain.
"I'm the head coach now, I need to appoint my own captains. It's common knowledge that the ones that have been there were appointed by my predecessor," said Mafu.
He said Sibanda has to concentrate on his goalkeeping duties instead of worrying about barking instructions to his in-field colleagues.
"He has a lot on his hands," said Mafu.
The Bosso coach said being a captain was not about performance on the field but leadership skills and other qualities as well.
Mafu also said he deliberately left out Bruce Kangwa because the player was now a striker which will keep him busy leaving little time for extra duties.
"Chindungwe has the qualities which I want and complemented by his defensive position, he'll be able to deliver," said Mafu.
While the general belief has been that defenders make good captains, some of the most successful goalkeepers have also been captains with Real Madrid's Iker Casillas standing out.
Sibanda was appointed Highlanders skipper last year, taking over from veteran Innocent Mapuranga after the 4-0 mauling by Dynamos in the TM Supermarkets Challenge match at the giant National Sports Stadium in Harare.
There has also been a school of thought that the former Plumtree High School student was a bit reserved and quiet for a captain.
Chindungwe, who was the Chicken Inn captain before joining Amahlolanyama, will lead his troops for the first time on Sunday in a Zimbabwe National Army Charity Shield semi-final tie against How Mine at Barbourfields Stadium.
Winners of the match will proceed to Harare for the final against the winner between Caps United and Dynamos who are clashing in the other semi-final at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.
The final has tentatively been set for the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League mid-season break.
