THE sacked Highlanders' technical staff comprising head coach Bongani Mafu and his assistants Mandla Mpofu and Peter Nkomo as well as welfare manager Netsai Moyo will remain on the Bosso payroll until the end of November.
Reports also say the newly appointed interim technical bench of technical director Cosmas Zulu and head coach Amini Soma-Phiri will only get winning bonuses and allowances as part of their package up to the end of the season.
A Highlanders insider said new assistant coach Melusi Mabaleka Sibanda and welfare manager Vezigama Dlodlo were already on the club's payroll as juniors' coach and kit manager respectively.
"The two guys (Zulu and Soma-Phiri) are not on the payroll. They actually agreed to come on board on the club's terms that they be paid winning bonuses and other allowances," said the insider. Inquiries showed that the fired trio had different contractual clauses dealing with disengagement, which range from two to three months' notice with pay.
"With the negative financial position of the club, it would have been difficult for the club to meet the salary requirements of the new technical team while also paying people for doing nothing as is happening now," said the source. Soma-Phiri skirted a question about whether he was interested in the job on a fulltime basis at the club's weekly Press conference yesterday.
"I took up this post now to save a situation because I love Highlanders. It's my team, so obviously if ever that would happen, certain things which are not happening now have to be done, but for now, I don't want to talk much about that," said Soma-Phiri.
Highlanders' chief executive officer Ndumiso Gumede refused to field questions from this reporter. "You know that I don't want to talk to you (and) I even told you the other day at the club house. You soiled my name badly when you published that story even though you sent that young man to write it. I know it is you who wrote it, so please get out of my office," said Gumede.
The story Gumede was referring to is about a 17-year-old girl, who caused a scene at the Highlanders' club house in May accusing the 69-year-old veteran administrator of impregnating her and failing to fend for the then four-month-old baby.
