Schools in Zimbabwe will close earlier than expected in the second term because of elections slated for end of July.

According to the schools calendar, the second term which started on May 8 was scheduled to end on August 9.

But Primary and Secondary Education minister Professor Larry Mavhima told a gathering in Bulawayo that the schools calendar is likely to be affected by elections.

This week, President Emmerson Mnangagwa gazetted July 30 as the date for the plebiscite.

This year's harmonized are the first without former long ruling Robert Mugabe and his sworn enemy, the late Morgan Tsvangirai. The two squared off a record three times with Mugabe emerging the ultimate winner.

In 2008 elections, the rivalry between the two forced a re-run which was boycotted by Tsvangirai citing an uneven electoral field.

In this year's elections, Mnangagwa, Mugabe's successor faces stiff challenge from the young MDC-T president, Nelson Chamisa.
