5 die in ambulance crash

A KAROI District Hospital ambulance driver, nurse and two patients died on the spot while another passenger died later after an ambulance they were travelling in collided with a truck along the Harare-Chirundu Highway on Wednesday.

The two-tonne truck was travelling towards Harare from Kariba and the accident happened near Bufallo Downs.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident, adding that the victims included a nurse, two patients, an ambulance driver and a relative accompanying one of the patients.

The deceased are Laurence Lundu (39) the driver, Marjury Matutu, a nurse, and the two patients Patricia Murisa (18) a pregnant woman and Tichaona Matashu (47).

The patients were being transported to Chinhoyi Hospital for treatment.

Nyathi said the fifth victim, who was unidentified died while being transported to Harare for treatment.

"The ambulance encroached onto the lane of an on-coming truck, which tried to avoid a head-on collision by moving to the right, but the twotonne truck was hit by the ambulance," Nyathi said. He said the driver of the truck, Ryan Murembe from Harare fled from the scene after the accident, while two passengers in his truck sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at Karoi Hospital.
