A 34-year-old cross-border transport operator commonly known as umalayitsha has been arrested for allegedly duping a South Africa-based Bulawayo woman of 41 cellphones worth R17 000.
The man allegedly collected the cellphones from the woman on the understanding that he would deliver them to the complainant's husband in Bulawayo.
Bongani Dube of Number 3 Backshere Road, Malindela suburb in Bulawayo pleaded not guilty to theft charges when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Victor Mpofu on Tuesday.
He was remanded to 10 September on $100 bail.
The prosecutor, Mr Shepherd Nhamburo, said on 16 August at about 6.15pm, the complainant, Ms Joana Masango met Dube at Park Station in Johannesburg, South Africa. The two allegedly entered into a deal and Ms Masango gave Dube 41 cellphones so that he could deliver them to her husband in Bulawayo.
Dube took the gadgets and loaded them into his car before driving to Bulawayo.
The court was told that on arrival, Dube did not make an effort to deliver the cellphones to the intended recipient and instead converted them to his own use.
When Ms Masango contacted her husband about the cellphones it was discovered that the consignment had not been delivered.
A report was made to the police leading to the arrest of Dube. The stolen cellphones were not recovered.
