A Bulawayo man on Thursday refused to pay maintenance for his four children blaming his wife for increasing his responsibilities by being a "baby-making machine."

Tonderai Nyazika of Nketa 9 appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Victor Mpofu after his estranged wife Eunice Haradi took him to court claiming $500 for maintenance.

Nyazika said he left the matrimonial home because Haradi kept on having more babies.

"I told her that I did not want to have more children but she kept falling pregnant and increasing my financial responsibilities. I had to leave but we already had four children," he said.

He said he could not afford to pay maintenance for his children because he had another family to look after.

"She is responsible for all the children and now I am supposed to suffer in taking care of them," he said.

Haradi accused her husband of trying to force her to abort her last pregnancy.

"He wanted me to abort but I refused because I had no guts to do it," she said.

"I need $500 for maintenance because he has abandoned us and there is no one to take care of us. I need to buy food for the children, pay their school fees and pay rent," she said

The magistrate ignored Nyazika's claims and ordered him to pay $110 as maintenance.

"She was not making these babies on her own. What did you expect if you were having unprotected sex with her? You must be man enough to take responsibility for your actions.

Respondent will also pay rentals and school fees for the children," said Mpofu.
