A BULAWAYO man yesterday pleaded with his estranged wife to return home after she fled to live with another man when he was working in South Africa.
John Ncube revealed in the maintenance court that he discovered that his wife had another child with another man upon his return from South Africa in 2010.
The woman, Irene Ndlovu, took with her four minor kids she had with Ncube. Ndlovu has dragged Ncube to court seeking $120 for the upkeep of the children who are aged 16, 14, 11 and 9.
"I went to seek employment in South Africa during Zimbabwe's economic meltdown. When I came back home in 2010, I discovered that she had another child with another man. I was unemployed at the time so I could not stop her from taking our children with her. She now lives with this man but I want us to be a family again," said Ncube.
Ncube also told the magistrate that he could not afford the $120 as he had other responsibilities.
"I earn $150 a month so I can't afford to pay $120. I rent a one-roomed house as well which costs me $50. I barely have enough to look after myself so I can only afford $20," said Ncube who also claimed that his local employer had promised Ndlovu a job but she turned down the offer.
However, Ndlovu defended herself saying her former husband fled from his family when times were tough.
"This man ran away to South Africa when his family needed him the most. He barely ever sent anything that is why I had to look for another man to take care of me and my children," said Ndlovu.
Magistrate Takunda Mtetwa castigated Ncube for failing to take care of his children.
"How do you expect your wife to come back to you yet you cannot afford to look after her or your children? Your children have to go to school and they have to be well fed. That is your responsibility as a father," said the magistrate who then ordered Ncube to pay $80 starting this month-end.
