Bulawayo Unemployment Youth Agenda (BUYA), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) which is into assisting youth in getting employment yesterday bemoaned the dearth of unemployment opportunities in Bulawayo Province saying the situation has reached intolerable levels.
Addressing journalist during a press club held yesterday at a local hotel in Bulawayo, BUYA Chairperson Zenso Moyo said their organisation was working tirelessly to make sure that the local youth get job opportunities from the province first.
"Employment opportunities are very low in Matebeleland than any other sector of the country. This is why our organisation is based here in Bulawayo. We are not tribal; it is because the situation is worse in this region.
"The divorce rate is also high here as a result of unemployment. It is very sad indeed that most of our youth are moving outside side the country in search for jobs in the neighbouring countries," said Nyoni.
He added that the organisation was going to ensure that the local youth get employment first in Bulawayo before other people from other regions.
"Our organisation is there to provide equal employment opportunities to all youth in this province. We assist youths who want to venture into projects of their choices," he said.
Echoing similar sentiments a representative of ZAPU Patrick Ndhlovu who attended the event said their party was not happy with the number of the youth that were not employed from the province.
"ZANU Pf is the main cause of lack of employment in this region. It failed to implement what they promised during the election campaigns. They promised 2 million job opportunities but up to now there is nothing. Even the economic decline of this country is directly linked to ZANU," said Ndhlovu adding that the kind of education provided in this country does not fully prepare students to work in the industry.
He also took the opportunity to castigate the recent farm wrangle that happened at Maleme and said their party condemned such kind of behaviour.
"We condemn what is happening in the Southern region of this country. We condemn the hypocrisy of the ZRP police in violating the rights of the people of Maleme. We believe if they are doing land redistribution, they should do it properly," said Ndhlovu.
This view was supported by a representative from the MDC Ephithule Maphosa who said the real problems of this country were a result of the type of government that we have in the country.
"What happened in Maleme is very bad. Resources in Maleme should benefit local people and not outsiders," said Maphosa adding that all this was caused by lack of democracy in the country.
