HIGHLANDERS Football Club speed merchant Gabriel Nyoni has hired Harare strippers to spearhead his Nust Student Representative Council (SRC) presidential campaign.

As part of his campaign, Nyoni, 22, a fourth-year marketing student, will host the strippers at Club Forty40 at a party dubbed College Manifesto Bash.

"The bash is for first-year students who I want to launch my manifesto to perform ahead of the elections this month," said Nyoni.

Asked why he was using strippers for his campaign, the former Pamushana High School student said it was because they were popular among students.

"I chose to campaign using strippers because fellow students enjoy that type of entertainment. They frequent Club Forty40 to watch the strippers perform so I decided why not give the people what they want," he said.

Last month the Highlanders striker, who is married to Chivaraidzo Charity Mukome, declared his interests in student politics after completing his attachment at a local non-governmental organisation.

In an interview, B-Metro, Nyoni, who hopes to take over from outgoing Nust SRC president Shadowlight Ndou said he was inspired by President Robert Mugabe who, according to him, has done a splendid job for the country ever since it gained independence.

"I'm greatly inspired by President Mugabe. His inspiration to me has nothing to do with my first name and his middle name (Gabriel). He's a great leader who has done well for the country since 1980. I believe I've the quality to lead students at Nust. I think I'm a natural leader," he told B-Metro.

Affectionately known by Bosso fans as Granvia because of his speed, Nyoni said being involved in student politics would not compromise his studies and football career.

"It's all about time management. There's nothing impossible. I'll continue going for training and attending lectures. Nothing can stop me."

Club Forty40 entertainment manager DJ Mzoe said the club, which recently hosted a welcome party for first-year students, decided to partner with Nyoni after discovering that tertiary students were starved of entertainment.

"Apart from odd beauty pageants at the tertiary institutions, there's not much entertainment for students. If all goes well, we'll host more of these shows for students," said DJ Mzoe.
