The government in partnership with the Japanese International Co-operation Agency (JICA), has completed the first phase of the latest digital map of Greater Harare which is expected to replace the old one that has not been updated for the past 30 years.
Japanese Charge de'Affairs to Zimbabwe, Mr Jabulani Tsunakake handed over the new digital maps to the Minister of Lands and Rural Resettlement, Dr Douglas Mombeshora.
Minister Mombeshora hailed the bilateral technical support by JICA to upgrade the country's Surveyor General maps through the development of a geo-spatial information database project.
The government intends to spread the project to the remaining parts of Harare and other towns and cities where the maps are outdated.
The latest digital map which includes current accurate data of Greater Harare also covers three dimensional topographic data which can be used by the City of Harare to re-design drainage, water and sewerage systems.
The new map will be readily available to the public starting in July 2017.
