A man, who pickpocketed US$40 from a money-changer, will live to curse the day after he was bashed until he collapsed in Bulawayo's city centre.
A source who witnessed the incident that lasted for nearly 20 minutes said a man, who only identified himself as Obvious, was spotted by a money-changer pickpocketing another money-changer near corner Sixth Avenue and Joshua Mqabuko Street.
Things took a nasty turn for Obvious as one of the money-changers charged at him while ordering him to return the money he stole from her fellow money changer.
He tried to run away, but was grabbed by other money-changers. They took turns to bash him all over the body. Some people who had gathered to witness the incident, tore his t-shirt and severely pummelled him, causing him to wail for help, but his cries did not draw any sympathy because they continued assaulting him until he fainted.
They poured water on him and after a few minutes he regained consciousness. The unforgiving people hit him again and again, ordering him to surrender the money. Realising that the beatings would not stop, the thief gave in and produced the stolen money.
He was then taken to Bulawayo Central Police Station.
Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident and urged community members not to take the law into their hands but to report such cases to the police.
