Police commanders from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region will convene in Lusaka, Zambia, from June 13 to 14 for the 29th Annual General Meeting of the Chiefs of Police Sub Committee/Southern African Regional Police Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO).
The primary focus will be on strategies to combat cross-border crimes, which threaten regional peace, security, and development. Zambian Police Inspector General Graphel Musamba, the SARPCCO chairperson, will lead the meeting.
The agenda includes reviewing the implementation of regional and international legal instruments and strategies to fight transnational organized crime. Discussions will also cover cooperation and coordination in mutual legal assistance and extradition. The meeting aims to strengthen regional frameworks under the Regional Indicative Strategic Plan (RISDP 2020-2030) by addressing strategic objectives related to policing, governance, human rights, and security.
The event will examine the SADC Integrated Strategy to Prevent and Combat Transnational Organised Crime, the SADC Protocol on Firearms Control, and other protocols on extradition, mutual legal assistance, combating illicit drugs, and anti-corruption measures.
SARPCCO is recognized for its role in combating cross-border and transnational crimes, setting a benchmark for international police cooperation. The gathering will be preceded by meetings of Interpol National Bureau Centres (NBCs) heads and SARPCCO Technical Organs.
