The Ministry of Health and Child Care in Zimbabwe has assured the public that the recent surge in influenza-like illness cases is not linked to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Health Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora reported to Cabinet that the country has seen fewer flu cases compared to the previous year. Despite the increase in flu cases, there has been no resurgence of Covid-19, with no new cases reported in the last four weeks.
To address the issue of drug and substance abuse, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe briefed Cabinet on successful efforts, including the destruction of 48 drug havens and the arrest of over 2,300 suspects across six provinces.
Joint operations involving the Liquor Licensing Board and the police resulted in the inspection of 724 liquor premises, leading to the arrest of 124 outlet owners for license violations.
Cabinet approved an increase in fines for drug abuse from US$30 to US$400 or imprisonment for up to two years. The government has also intensified drug awareness campaigns, reaching over 25,000 youths and sensitizing nearly 570,000 learners on anti-drug measures across various provinces.
