President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to officiate the groundbreaking ceremony for a new 720-megawatt power station in Hwange next week, signaling another milestone in Zimbabwe's drive for energy self-sufficiency.

The development underscores growing investor confidence in Matabeleland North, which has emerged as a hub for coal mining, processing, and power generation. More than a dozen coal-related firms are already operating in the province, contributing to Zimbabwe's energy and industrial capacity.

The Second Republic, under President Mnangagwa's leadership, continues to achieve remarkable economic progress despite the challenges of illegal sanctions. Leveraging local resources and fostering strategic partnerships, the Government is advancing the goals outlined in National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and Vision 2030.
Matabeleland North: A Development Hub

Matabeleland North has become a focal point for national development initiatives, hosting key infrastructure and energy projects: Hwange Thermal Power Station Expansion: The US$1.5 billion expansion of Units 7 and 8 has added 600MW to the national grid, addressing energy deficits and boosting industrial activity. Muchesu Coal Mine (Binga District): A significant player in coal production, contributing to the region's economic growth. SolGas Energy Solar Power Plant: A US$7.3 million, 5MW solar project at Cross Mabale in Hwange District, highlighting the country's commitment to diversifying energy sources. Lake Gwayi-Shangani Project: A landmark water project aimed at improving water supply in Hwange and Bulawayo. Victoria Falls International Airport Expansion: Enhancing connectivity to one of Zimbabwe's top tourist destinations. Bubi-Lupane Irrigation Project: Launched in October 2021, it supports agricultural development in Lupane District.

Energy Independence and Economic Growth

The upcoming power station will further enhance Zimbabwe's energy security and support industrial growth. President Mnangagwa has championed initiatives to harness the country's abundant natural resources, positioning energy as a cornerstone of development.

This project complements other efforts by entities such as the Zimbabwe Power Company and Hwange Colliery Company Limited, which have been instrumental in driving energy projects in the region.

President Mnangagwa's administration remains focused on transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy by 2030. Matabeleland North's development projects are a testament to this vision, bringing tangible benefits to communities while strengthening the country's economic foundations.

The groundbreaking ceremony next week will mark yet another step forward in Zimbabwe's journey toward energy sufficiency and economic prosperity.
