Ecobank reopens Parkade branch after $4 million heist

Ecobank Zimbabwe has reopened its Parkade branch in Bulawayo's Central Business District (CBD) after a two-month closure following a shocking armed robbery. The October 3 heist, described as Zimbabwe's largest, saw six masked robbers escape with an estimated US$4 million.
In a notice to customers, Ecobank announced the branch's reopening yesterday, stating:
"We are pleased to announce that our Parkade Branch in Bulawayo will reopen tomorrow, (Monday) December 2, 2024. Our team has worked diligently to ensure the branch is ready to serve you again, and we look forward to welcoming you back. Please note that our digital channels remain available for easy, convenient, and secure banking."
The bank had temporarily closed the branch to facilitate investigations and implement stronger security protocols.
Ecobank managing director, Mr. Moses Kurenjekwa, assured customers that stringent measures were now in place to ensure their safety.
"Following the recent armed robbery incident, we have implemented enhanced security measures, including increased surveillance, additional security personnel, and improved access controls to ensure a safe banking environment," said Kurenjekwa.
He encouraged customers to make use of the bank's digital channels, which offer a secure and convenient alternative for transactions.
The daring robbery, which took place in broad daylight, left the Bulawayo community shaken.
The incident occurred as two Safeguard Security vehicles were parked outside the branch while security guards were loading cash boxes. The six masked robbers swiftly disarmed the guards and made off with the cash, leaving bystanders in shock.
The heist has been described as the largest in Zimbabwe's history, prompting businesses to heighten security measures.
Local businesses and residents welcomed the reopening of the Parkade branch but emphasized the need for continued vigilance.
"Such incidents are worrying, especially for those of us operating nearby. We hope the new security measures will deter any similar occurrences," said a shop owner in the vicinity.
