WhatsApp rapists arrested in Zimbabwe

Two men, Macdonald Manzungu and Tedious Nyashanu, both 20, were apprehended in a dramatic sting operation after they allegedly lured women with fake job offers in a WhatsApp group and subsequently raped them. The suspects were caught on Saturday evening, reported H-Metro, and have since been handed over to the police. They are currently in custody at Chikwanha Police Station in Chitungwiza, awaiting court proceedings as investigations continue.

The trap was set by a youth leader from Charigwati Village in Seke, who mobilised local youths including Kudakwashe Machipisa, Itai Mahachi, and Michael Shonhiwa. The group had been informed of the suspects’ previous offenses, including the rape of a woman from Waterfalls, and devised a plan to capture them.

The operation began when the youth leader contacted the father of the previous victim, informing him of their plan to trap the perpetrators. A friend of the victim was used as bait by posting a message in the same WhatsApp group, offering her services as a housemaid. The suspects responded quickly, promising her a job with a higher salary of $160, more than her current pay of $100.

Arrangements were made for the woman to meet Manzungu and Nyashanu near Chikwanha Shopping Centre in Seke, where the suspects believed they were meeting a potential employee. However, unbeknownst to them, three groups of local youths were lying in wait to apprehend them. As the suspects walked with the woman toward Nyatsime College, the groups sprang into action near the Manhombo area, successfully capturing the men.

This arrest comes after a recent warning issued by the police about the dangers of responding to job offers and dating requests on social media. The warning follows a similar incident earlier this month, in which a 20-year-old woman was sexually abused after being lured to a secluded spot in Charigwati Village, Seke, under the pretense of a fake job offer for a bar sales position.

The capture of Manzungu and Nyashanu highlights the growing concerns over fake job scams and sexual predators targeting vulnerable individuals on social media platforms. Local authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
