The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has managed to exceedingly meet demand by 38,9 percent this festive season.
In a statement, GMAZ chairperson, Dr Tafadzwa Musarara said the milling industry has managed to supply the local market with various grain-processed products and the suppliers are exceeding demand.
"The grain milling industry has this festive season, successfully supplied the local market with various grain processed products including maize meal, rice, flour, salt and others. Whilst demand is currently high the suppliers are exceeding demand by more than 38,9% resulting in price stabilisation and products available in all retail shops both formal and informal," Dr Musarara said.
He further hailed the government for implementing a private-led approach in achieving national food security.
"We are most grateful to the government for implementing a private-led approach in achieving food security. This resonates with the international best practice," Musarara added.
Musarara further pledged to continue with adequate supply of grain to the local market especially during this period of drought.
"As the country continues to endure the vagaries of weather, we pledge our continued commitment to adquately supply the local market and support local agriculture through contract farming which adds opening more source markets to ensure prices remain affordable," he added.
Meanwhile the Minister of Agriculture Dr Anxious Masuka weighed in saying there is enough grain in the strategic grain reserve to feed everyone.
"There is enough grain in the strategic grain reserve to feed everyone until March next year. There will also be enough grain to feed 4,5 million learners in basic education schools until April next year, requiring 276 000 tonnes for social welfare school-feeding programmes,” said Dr Masuka.
