Seventeen individuals were arrested in Harare's central business district for taking photographs with their smartphones at the scene of a road traffic accident. The incident occurred at the corner of Robert Mugabe Road and Sam Nujoma Street after a commuter omnibus, whose driver was reportedly evading arrest, collided with a truck.

Police swiftly intervened, rounding up the self-styled journalists and confiscating their mobile phones. The authorities have expressed concern over a growing trend of individuals recording and posting pictures and videos of accident scenes on social media. Law enforcement officials believe this practice fuels alarm and despondency among the public.

In a statement, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi emphasized the importance of respecting accident victims and adhering to legal boundaries when at such scenes. "We urge members of the public to refrain from unauthorized photography at accident sites. It not only interferes with police investigations but also perpetuates unnecessary panic through social media," he said.

Eyewitnesses reported that the commuter omnibus driver had been attempting to evade arrest, allegedly for operating without proper documentation, when the collision occurred. Emergency services attended the scene, but no official updates on casualties or damages have been released.

The arrests highlight the ongoing challenge for authorities to balance citizens' access to technology with the need to maintain public order and respect for victims.
