A man from Cowdray Park who thought he could outrun the law found himself behind bars after police caught him red-handed with stolen goods in a daring early-morning robbery gone wrong.

Thabo Dube (29) was apprehended near Renkini Terminus in the city centre after police officers on routine patrol noticed him and his accomplice, Mkhululi Ncube, carrying suspicious items in the dark. The two had just broken into a storeroom at National Foods on Basch Street in the early hours of 16 May, making off with a haul that included 26 work suits, 88 sunhats, three pairs of gumboots, and a welding machine.

According to Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the duo had forced their way into the premises by smashing a window.

"At around 0340 hours, our officers were patrolling near the long-distance bus terminus when they noticed two men with property that clearly looked out of place," said Insp Msebele. "When approached, one of the suspects bolted. The other, Thabo Dube, was not so lucky. He was arrested on the spot."

The goods, worth US$1 128.44, were recovered in full. Later that morning, a storeman at National Foods filed a report after discovering the break-in. Upon inspection, he confirmed that the stolen items matched the recovered property.

During interrogation, Dube reportedly admitted to the break-in and named Ncube as his accomplice. Police have since launched a manhunt for Ncube, who remains at large.

"We are out in full force," warned Inspector Msebele. "Criminals must change their ways. We are watching the city day and night—it's only a matter of time before we catch them."

Dube is expected to appear in court soon facing charges of unlawful entry and theft. Meanwhile, authorities are urging members of the public to report any information that may assist in locating the second suspect.
