A wave of shock and horror has swept through Besa Village after a young mother and her two young children were found dead in a suspected double child murder followed by suicide, in a chilling incident that has left the local community reeling.
The bodies of Ruth Ruvarashe Chidume (35) and her children - Tatenda Precious Blessings Gumbo (4) and Ira Makanakaishe Gumbo (2) - were discovered on June 9, 2025, in a locked bedroom of their homestead under circumstances police are now investigating as a suspected case of murder and suicide.
According to police reports, Ruth was found hanging from a wooden beam, with a nylon fabric tied tightly around her neck. Her children were discovered blindfolded, their heads covered with plastic bags, which had been tied below their necks, suggesting deliberate suffocation.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, stating that investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to the deaths.
"We are conducting thorough investigations to understand what happened. We appeal to anyone with information to come forward," said Comm Nyathi.
The gruesome scene was reportedly discovered by neighbours after they noticed an unusual silence from the household and forced their way into the house.
The incident has sparked widespread grief and raised renewed concerns over mental health struggles, social isolation, and domestic pressures in rural communities.
Local leaders and villagers, still trying to process the trauma, described the late Ruth as a quiet and reserved individual. While no clear motive has been established, some suspect she may have been battling emotional or financial difficulties.
"This is a tragedy beyond words. We need to pay more attention to the signs of distress, especially among mothers who may be silently struggling," said one local elder.
Mental health experts have weighed in, warning that without adequate support structures and access to counselling services, such tragedies could become more common.
Zimbabwe has seen a rise in reports of family-related murders and suicides, often rooted in poverty, domestic violence, or untreated psychological issues. Advocacy groups have called for more resources to be directed toward mental health services, particularly in underserved rural areas.
Meanwhile, police say the bodies have been taken to Chitungwiza Central Hospital for post-mortem examinations, and funeral arrangements are being coordinated by family members with assistance from the community.
As Besa Village mourns the tragic loss, calls are growing louder for urgent national attention to the mental well-being of families, especially vulnerable women and children.
