Former opposition leader Nelson Chamisa is poised to announce a new political movement on September 27 in Chiwara, Gutu, marking a major milestone in his political career.

Sources close to Chamisa's camp said the former ICT Minister in the 2009–2013 inclusive government will unveil the movement on the same day he officially hands over a church he built for the Zion Apostolic Church yekwaMakamba yeTambo, where his father is a prominent member. The church, a personal tribute to his father, also symbolizes Chamisa's longstanding ties to faith and community.

Political analyst Prof. Eldred Masunungure described the move as expected, noting that Chamisa's charisma and leadership could help fill the long-standing void left by the weakened opposition in Zimbabwe.

"The launch of a new political movement by Chamisa is not surprising as rumours have been circulating for a long time. This will go a long way in filling the huge void left by opposition parties in the country. The opposition has been on life support for a long time, and with his charisma, there is no doubt it will rise again," Prof. Masunungure said.

A prominent lawyer, speaking on condition of anonymity, echoed the view that while Chamisa may have lost credibility among some serious voters due to past mistakes, his strong grassroots following makes him a formidable political force. "The majority of the electorate do not focus on errors; they respond to charisma and leadership. Chamisa remains the best available option to lead the opposition," she said.

Chamisa left the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in early 2024 after the party was reportedly infiltrated by Sengezo Tshabangu, leading to the purging of many of Chamisa's allies. He subsequently declared a political sabbatical.

Though the launch has not yet been officially confirmed by Chamisa, insiders say preparations are underway. The dual symbolism of faith and politics is expected to resonate with supporters ahead of the 2028 harmonised elections, recently confirmed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa during a Zanu-PF Central Committee address.

Chamisa's early political involvement included attending the same church as his father before later joining the AFM in Harare. The upcoming event is expected to draw church members, local leaders, and political allies, signaling the former leader's re-entry into Zimbabwe's political arena.
