ZimSports4ED rallies behind Warriors

With less than 80 days to go before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off in Morocco, anticipation is building for Zimbabwe's sixth appearance at the continental tournament.

The national team, the Warriors, have been drawn in Group B alongside football heavyweights Egypt, South Africa, and Angola. Zimbabwe will open their campaign against seven-time champions Egypt at Adrar Stadium in Agadir on December 22, before facing Angola in Marrakesh on December 26, and concluding the group stage with a clash against South Africa on December 29.

ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi has been spearheading efforts to rally the nation behind the Warriors. Adding their voice, the Government-backed ZimSports4ED initiative has also called for unity and belief within the football fraternity.

"Sport is a unifier, so we must all come together and support the Warriors as they prepare for another AFCON appearance," said ZimSports4ED chairperson Gabriel Togarepi.

He acknowledged the team's recent challenges but emphasised that the tournament presents an opportunity for Zimbabwean players to showcase their talent on an international stage. "Yes, the Warriors have not been producing good results lately, but they remain our national hope. The AFCON finals are a perfect stage for our players to market themselves and potentially earn moves to established leagues in Europe and beyond," Togarepi said.

ZimSports4ED is a Government initiative aimed at promoting sport for economic development, nurturing grassroots talent, and addressing youth drug abuse. The programme also seeks to professionalise sport in Zimbabwe and position it as a viable career path.

Earlier this year, ZimSports4ED held its inaugural multi-sport tournament in Harare, coinciding with Munhumutapa Day and President Mnangagwa's birthday. Hundreds of athletes participated in disciplines including soccer, netball, volleyball, karate, and boxing. The initiative plans to expand such tournaments across all ten provinces.

Togarepi stressed the broader societal impact of sport, saying, "Sport provides opportunities and can be a powerful tool in combating substance abuse. If treated as a business, sport can transform the lives of many Zimbabweans."

As the Warriors prepare to take on continental giants, ZimSports4ED and other stakeholders are urging fans to unite behind the team, highlighting the tournament as both a sporting and national pride opportunity.
