A swift police operation at Dulibadzimu Bus Terminus in Beitbridge on October 2, 2025, resulted in the arrest of Simbarashe Jimmy Madziva (27) for unlawful possession of a pistol fitted with a magazine containing seven blank cartridges. Following his arrest, Madziva implicated Munyaradzi Chitsike (39), who was later apprehended by authorities.
The arrests come as Zimbabwe is implementing a nationwide firearm amnesty, which runs from September 24 to October 24, 2025. The amnesty, declared by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, allows citizens to surrender unlicensed or improperly registered firearms without facing prosecution.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the initiative is aimed at curbing crimes linked to unlicensed weapons. "Investigations show that some individuals still hold guns despite changes in circumstances, such as the closure of companies, expired gun club memberships, or the death of licensed owners," he said.
Authorities have urged the public to take advantage of the amnesty period, warning that after its expiry, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) will step up checks and verifications. "The public should take advantage of this amnesty to regularise their possession and ownership of firearms," Commissioner Nyathi added.
Madziva and Chitsike are expected to face charges relating to the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
