President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a State of Disaster following the tragic DNC Coach bus accident in Limpopo Province, South Africa, which claimed the lives of 43 people on Sunday.
The President has directed the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, through the Department of Civil Protection, to provide State-assisted burials for the deceased and to cover medical expenses for the injured survivors.
Government has also mobilised immediate logistical support to assist affected families. Free transport has been arranged to ferry next of kin to Polokwane for the identification of bodies. Buses will depart at 12:00pm on October 15 from the National Disaster Management Centre at Makombe Building in Harare.
In a statement released today, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe urged families of the deceased to come forward to assist with the identification process.
"The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and other Government entities, is calling upon relatives of the deceased to come forward and assist in the identification process," said Minister Garwe.
He added that the repatriation process will begin as soon as positive identification is completed.
Minister Garwe also confirmed that President Mnangagwa had directed his ministry to coordinate with relevant departments to ensure all victims receive dignified burials and that the injured are given full medical assistance.
