A 28-year-old man from Gwayi turned a friendly game of pool into a scene of chaos after a dispute over the score escalated into violent destruction of property worth US$1,500, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has revealed.
According to prosecutors, Cloudious Nyoni was playing pool with friends at a local bar on 3 October 2025 when tempers flared following an argument about the game's outcome.
In a fit of rage, Nyoni flipped the pool table, sending balls flying across the room before grabbing a cue stick and smashing a 52-inch television mounted on the wall.
"The offender reacted violently and turned over the pool table which then fell to the ground and got damaged. He then used a pool stick to smash a 52-inch television which was on the wall," said the NPAZ in a statement.
The outburst left patrons in shock as Nyoni's fury transformed what was meant to be a peaceful sporting pastime into a violent outburst of destruction.
The Hwange Magistrates' Court sentenced Nyoni to 12 months in jail, with six months suspended for five years. The remaining six months were also suspended on the condition that he pays restitution of US$1,500 to the bar owner by 17 November 2025.
In its statement, the NPAZ condemned the incident and urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully.
"We urge members of the public to desist from senseless acts of violent behaviour which usually lead to dire consequences. The law will not hesitate to punish offenders and protect victims in such cases like this one," said the NPAZ.
The case has drawn local attention as another example of how alcohol-fueled disputes continue to spark violence in entertainment venues across Zimbabwe.
