The City of Bulawayo has reopened its public swimming pools, offering residents a safe and refreshing way to beat the summer heat. The facilities are staffed by experienced lifeguards to ensure safety and enjoyment for all visitors.
The council-operated pools are located at Barham Green, Bulawayo City Pool, Northend, Mpopoma, and Luveve, while an additional pool at Barbourfields operates through a public-private partnership.
Sibonizwe Vincent Ngobe, Bulawayo's Swimming Pools Superintendent, emphasised that safety remains a top priority. "We have employed highly qualified and experienced lifeguards who are members of the Zimbabwe Lifesaving Society to prevent accidents and drownings," he said. "Our lifeguards and coaches also provide expert instruction to individuals, schools, and clubs, fostering a safe and supportive learning environment."
Ngobe noted that cubicle attendants are on hand to securely store bathers' belongings using a token system, and the council collaborates with organisations like the Bulawayo Amateur Swimming Association to keep activities vibrant and engaging. The centrally located Bulawayo City Pool remains the most popular, offering facilities suitable for professional competitions.
The pools cater to all age groups, from toddlers as young as two to senior citizens.
At the October council meeting, Housing and Community Services Director Dictor Khumalo highlighted the successful partnership with Sanctfyd (Pvt) Limited at the Barbourfields Pool. The five-year lease, revised due to Covid-19 and set to end next year, has seen major refurbishments, including a new multi-filtration system, CCTV cameras, a seating shed for refreshment vendors, new LED floodlights, and a Zesa prepaid meter.
Entry fees at the Barbourfields pool are US$2 for adults and US$1 for children, providing an affordable recreational option for the community.
