The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) says it is intensifying efforts to modernise the country's statistical systems through greater use of digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) and citizen-generated data. The agency made the remarks on Tuesday as it joined the rest of the continent in commemorating African Statistics Day.
In a statement, Zimstat said the modernisation drive aligns with trends across Africa, where national statistics offices are increasingly adopting technological tools to strengthen data production and enhance evidence-based decision-making.
"Like other African states, Zimbabwe is investing in modernizing its national statistical system through initiatives to adopt digital technologies, artificial intelligence, geospatial tools, big data sources, and citizen-generated data to produce official statistics," the agency said. "Such innovations have already begun transforming the statistical ecosystem, which is crucial for producing timely, reliable and accurate data."
Zimstat highlighted that the use of computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) for all surveys has already improved the quality and availability of data. This has enabled more effective tracking of progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and monitoring of the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).
African Statistics Day, observed annually on 18 November, raises awareness of the importance of statistics in advancing socio-economic development. The 2025 commemorations were held under the theme: "Leveraging innovations in data and statistics to promote a just, peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous society for Africans."
Zimstat said the theme underscores the growing need for African institutions to embrace technological innovation to strengthen data systems and support policy formulation. It also reflects the increasing recognition of data as a powerful tool for guiding national development, stimulating economic growth and improving citizens' well-being.
Despite progress made since 2015, Zimstat noted that many African countries still lack sufficient data to report effectively on Sustainable Development Goal 16, which focuses on peace, justice and strong institutions.
