The Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has promoted 21 officers of the Air Force of Zimbabwe in recognition of their distinguished service and dedication.
Among those elevated, Givemore Tavashure and Paridzirai Mazhindu have been promoted from Group Captain to Air Commodore. Sunboy Mafavuke, Bizeki Madzadzure, and Darlington Mudoti were promoted from Wing Commander to Group Captain, while 16 Squadron Leaders advanced to the rank of Wing Commander. Group Captain Mazhindu received her promotion in absentia as she is currently on external national duty.
The promotions, effective from 26 November 2025, were made under the provisions of the Defence Act (Chapter 11:02) Section 20, read together with Statutory Instrument 257 of 2020, Section 19c, Sub-section 2c. This legislation empowers the President, acting on the advice of the Minister of Defence and recommendations from the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, to reward officers for distinguished service or gallantry on active duty.
Speaking at the investiture ceremony, Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe, Air Marshal Jacob John Nzvede, described the promotions as a testament to hard work and loyalty to national duty. He emphasized that the elevated officers now carry greater responsibility within the military hierarchy.
"Today is yet another momentous occasion in the Air Force of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces. His Excellency, the President and Commander-in-Chief, has promoted two Group Captains to the rank of Air Commodore, three Wing Commanders to Group Captain, and 16 Squadron Leaders to Wing Commander. One of the newly promoted Air Commodores is currently away on assignment," Air Marshal Nzvede said.
He added, "As you celebrate this achievement, remember that promotion comes with higher responsibilities and expectations from both your superiors and subordinates. The Air Force and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces play a key role in creating a peaceful environment conducive to investment and national development."
In response, Air Commodore Tavashure, who is seconded to the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Rural Development as Chief Director in the Minister's office, expressed gratitude to President Mnangagwa for the confidence placed in them. He pledged continued loyalty to the Constitution and the command structure of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, vowing to serve the people of Zimbabwe diligently.
"May I take this opportunity to heartily thank you and your command element for tirelessly mentoring us throughout our military careers," he said. "It is through your guidance and consistent support that we have reached this stage today."
