A total of 5 983 passengers have used the National Railways of Zimbabwe's (NRZ) reintroduced passenger train service between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls over the past three months, reflecting growing interest in affordable domestic travel and rail-based tourism.
NRZ recently revived the tourism-focused passenger service as a cost-effective and scenic alternative aimed at linking travellers to some of Zimbabwe's most iconic destinations, while also boosting domestic tourism. The initiative falls under the railway company's Rail Leisure Division, which oversees all tourism-related assets and services.
The tourism train is part of a broader strategy to make local travel more accessible and affordable, targeting a wide range of travellers including families, local tourists and international visitors seeking a relaxed and immersive rail experience through Zimbabwe's diverse landscapes.
Beyond affordability, the service offers passengers an opportunity to relive the golden era of rail travel, complete with panoramic views of the countryside and a slower, more reflective journey that connects travellers with nature and heritage sites along the route.
NRZ public relations officer Andrew Kunambura said passenger numbers have steadily increased since the service was reintroduced on October 17, 2025.
"In the first month after reintroduction, 561 passengers used the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls service. In November, the figure rose significantly to 1 912 passengers," said Kunambura.
He added that demand surged further in December, with 3 510 passengers using the service during the festive season.
"We expect the numbers to continue rising as more people experience the convenience and value of our passenger train services," he said.
With a renewed focus on budget-conscious travel and the revival of local tourism, the NRZ tourism train is increasingly seen as an important step towards making Zimbabwe's world-class destinations more accessible to a wider audience.
