Zimbabwean football giants Highlanders have confirmed that incoming head coach Thabo Senong has returned to South Africa temporarily to allow immigration authorities to process his work permit.

Senong, who is set to lead the Bulawayo-based club ahead of the new season, arrived in Zimbabwe last Monday. On Friday evening, the club dismissed social media claims suggesting that he had been deported, clarifying that his departure was part of a standard immigration procedure.

According to the club, Senong's work permit application was submitted on Wednesday, 7 January, following receipt of the required cover letter from the Sport and Recreation Commission. The Immigration Department acknowledged the application and issued a tracking number.

Regional immigration officials reportedly advised the club that Senong should leave Zimbabwe temporarily while his permit is being processed, warning that remaining in the country or performing football-related duties could jeopardise the application. The club arranged for Senong to depart on an afternoon flight on Friday. Authorities estimate the work permit process will take between one and three weeks.

In the interim, Highlanders' assistant coach Mkhokheli Dube will oversee the team's pre-season preparations. Highlanders CEO Denzel Mnkandla said the club will provide updates once the work permit process is complete.

The club emphasised that Senong's temporary return is procedural and part of ensuring compliance with immigration regulations, reaffirming their commitment to a smooth start to the upcoming season.
