The trial of former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi, which was scheduled to commence on Tuesday before High Court judge Justice Benjamin Chikowero, has been postponed to later this month due to administrative challenges.
Justice Chikowero was unable to hear the matter as planned and has now set new trial dates for January 28, January 30 and February 3.
Mzembi is facing charges of theft of trust property and criminal abuse of office. He has been on remand since July last year after warrants of arrest were confirmed following his prolonged failure to appear in court since November 2018.
The former Cabinet minister is accused of failing to surrender his passport by November 19, 2018, and of missing a court appearance on January 18, 2019.
The charges arise from allegations that, while serving as Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Mzembi converted to personal use television sets worth about US$2 million that were procured for public fan parks during the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa.
Mzembi has denied the allegations, maintaining that he will clear his name when the trial eventually gets underway.
