POLICE have called on motorcyclists to strictly follow road rules and regulations to safeguard their own lives, as well as those of passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) issued the warning on 14 January 2026, highlighting a noticeable increase in motorcycle use across both urban and rural areas.

ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said many riders are flouting the law, citing cases of unregistered motorcycles, failure to wear protective helmets, operating without valid driver's or learner's licences, and carrying more than one passenger, which is illegal.

"The Police has also observed poor riding conduct by some motorcyclists, including ignoring road signs and signals, reckless and dangerous riding, excessive speed, improper overtaking, riding against the flow of traffic, and weaving through moving vehicles. This conduct poses a serious risk to the safety of the rider, passengers, pedestrians, and other road users," the statement reads.

Commissioner Nyathi reminded riders that the Road Traffic Act [Chapter 13:11] requires both the rider and passenger to wear approved protective helmets at all times, regardless of location. Learner riders must ensure their helmets are clearly marked with a red "L," and their motorcycles display the prescribed L-plates.

He further emphasized that motorcycles are legally allowed to carry only one passenger, who must also be properly seated and helmeted. All motorcycles must be properly registered and licensed; failure to comply constitutes a traffic offence and attracts legal penalties.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to intensify traffic enforcement operations countrywide to curb lawlessness and promote road safety," the statement added.

Motorcyclists and all road users are urged to comply with road rules, cooperate with law enforcement officers, and prioritise safety at all times.
