Newly appointed Highlanders head coach Benjani Mwaruwari has arrived in Bulawayo to officially take up his duties at the country's oldest football club.
The former Zimbabwe Warriors captain and ex-Manchester City striker touched down on Saturday afternoon and was welcomed at the Highlanders FC offices by senior club officials, marking the start of a new chapter for Bosso.
Leading the reception were executive chairman Kenneth Mhlophe, vice chairman Fiso Siziba, chief executive officer Denzil Mnkandla, board chair Luke Mnkandla and Wicknell Chivayo sponsorship manager Jabulani Nkomo. Benjani's assistant coach, Mkhokheli Dube, was also present during the welcome.
Nicknamed "The Undertaker" during his playing days, Benjani returns to Zimbabwean football carrying high expectations, with supporters hopeful that his vast international experience will help revive the club's fortunes.
His appointment follows days of intense public debate and speculation, but Saturday's arrival effectively signalled the end of uncertainty surrounding the club's technical leadership.
Benjani is expected to be formally introduced to players and technical staff in the coming days before overseeing his first training sessions as Highlanders head coach.
Highlanders, one of Zimbabwe's most decorated and passionately supported clubs, are banking on Benjani's leadership, pedigree and understanding of the game to restore competitiveness and reconnect the team with its winning identity.
