Acting President Dr Col (Rtd) Kembo Mohadi is set to preside over a high-level resource mobilisation ceremony today to support Mozambique following widespread flooding that has left thousands displaced and caused extensive damage.

In a statement, Acting Foreign Affairs and International Trade Permanent Secretary, Mrs Petronella Nyagura, said the Government of Zimbabwe is responding to a distress call from Maputo after catastrophic flash floods hit the provinces of Gaza, Maputo, Maputo Metropolitan, and Nampula.

"The floods have resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, with a preliminary report from the National Disaster Risk Management and Reduction of Mozambique indicating that, as of 13 January 2025, eight people have died and over 200 000 families and crops have been devastated," Mrs Nyagura said.

The Government, through ZimAID, is organising the ceremony in Harare to coordinate pledges and contributions from local donors, stakeholders, and partners. The mobilisation effort aligns with regional solidarity principles, facilitating prompt assistance in times of natural disasters.

Mozambican Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Carvalho Muaria, is expected to attend the event alongside local stakeholders who will make pledges of food, clothing, medical supplies, and other essential aid for affected communities.

ZimAID, a government-led programme, is designed to strengthen collaboration within the African continent, ensuring countries can pool resources to respond effectively to emergencies.

The ceremony underscores Zimbabwe's commitment to regional cooperation and humanitarian support, demonstrating solidarity with neighbouring countries during crises.
