Heavy rains cripple Zimbabwe-Botswana key link road

HEAVY rains pounding Bulilima District during the 2025/2026 rainy season have left large sections of the road network severely damaged, disrupting access to health facilities, markets and other essential services.

Among the worst affected is the Plumtree–Maitengwe Road, a key corridor linking Zimbabwe and Botswana.

On Saturday, this news crew observed a cross-border transporter vehicle stuck in mud just after the Maitengwe Border Post between Tjilukutu and Tjitabataba villages, highlighting the extent of the deterioration.

The situation has forced motorists to divert and use the longer Bambadzi-Mbimba-Madlambudzi route.

The persistent rains have also stalled works by Enock Construction Company on a 10-kilometre stretch that begins in Plumtree town and extends beyond Tsambani Shops at Makwa River in Village 28 along the Plumtree–Dombodema Road.

Residents and cross-border traders say the poor state of the road is affecting business and mobility.

Bukhosi Ncube, a cross-border transporter popularly known as an omalayitsha, urged Government to urgently rehabilitate the corridor.

"This road is a key player in the economy of our country, as we bring in money through revenue paid at the border post. We call upon the Government to prioritise fixing this road," said Ncube.

Communities in the district fear that if the rains persist without urgent intervention, transport costs will rise further and service delivery in remote areas will continue to suffer.
