Bulawayo proposes ban on firewood at braai spots

The City of Bulawayo has proposed a new braai policy that would ban the use of firewood at commercial braai spots while introducing stricter licensing, health and fire safety regulations for operators.

Under the proposed framework, only gas, electrical grills and charcoal would be permitted as fuel sources, with firewood and fire accelerants set to be prohibited.

City authorities say the draft regulations are intended to improve public health standards, strengthen food safety compliance and reduce environmental and fire risks linked to the growing number of braaiing operations across Bulawayo.

According to the draft policy prepared by the council's Health Services Department, all commercial braai operators would be required to formally register with the municipality before commencing operations.

Operators would also need to secure multiple approvals, including town planning clearance, approved building plans, fire clearance certificates and occupation certificates.

The proposed policy forms part of wider efforts by the local authority to regulate informal and semi-formal food businesses operating within the city.

Council officials say the measures are aimed at ensuring braai sites meet acceptable hygiene, infrastructure and public safety standards while minimising smoke pollution and fire hazards associated with open-fire cooking methods.

If adopted, the regulations could significantly alter the operations of many popular roadside and open-air braai outlets that currently rely heavily on firewood for cooking.
