The Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU) has called for a worker‑centred transition to a green economy, warning that the shift in the mining sector must not come at the expense of workers and their families.

Speaking at the close of a workshop held in Bulawayo on 11 May 2026, ZDAMWU General Secretary Justice Chinhema said Zimbabwe’s mining industry was standing at a critical crossroads as the world moves toward greener economic systems.

“The transition to a green economy is inevitable. But whether that transition leaves workers behind or carries them forward depends on the strength, preparedness and determination of this union,” Chinhema said.

He urged union members to leave the workshop equipped with knowledge and practical tools to advocate for a Just Transition that protects miners, workers and communities dependent on the mining sector.

“Let us commit today to leaving this workshop not just better informed, but better armed — armed with knowledge, with tools, and with a collective resolve to secure a Just Transition that works for every miner, every worker and every family that depends on this industry,” he said.

The workshop was organised under the 2026 IndustriALL–3F Project and brought together labour representatives and stakeholders to discuss the impact of climate and economic transitions on workers in the mining sector.

Chinhema expressed gratitude to IndustriALL Global Union and its Sub‑Saharan Africa Regional Office for coordinating and supporting the programme. He also thanked 3F, the Union of Denmark, for financial and solidarity support, as well as Swedish unions through the Union to Union Project.

He further commended facilitators Justice Zvaita and Thando Gwinji for guiding discussions during the two‑day engagement.

Chinhema encouraged participants to continue the discussions in their workplaces and communities to ensure labour movements integrate emerging perspectives linked to climate change and economic transformation.

The workshop ended with delegates reaffirming the union’s slogan:“Workers’ Rights are Human Rights — Justice in Transition, Now and Always.”
