Dynamos must clear match-fixing cloud

For decades, Dynamos has rarely been far from controversy, but the club's latest internal dispute has raised questions that extend far beyond its own dressing room.

The decision to suspend head coach Genesis Mangombe over allegations linked to match manipulation has sparked widespread debate, not only because of the seriousness of the accusations, but also because of the explanations contained in the club's suspension letter.

If the allegations are based on tactical decisions such as changing players' positions during matches, many football followers will understandably question whether such coaching decisions can reasonably be interpreted as evidence of match manipulation. Team selection and positional changes have traditionally fallen within a coach's technical responsibilities.

What has made the matter even more contentious is that Dynamos cited matches involving CAPS United, Highlanders, GreenFuel and Scottland FC.

By identifying specific fixtures, the suspension letter inevitably drew those clubs into a controversy they were never publicly accused of being part of. Regardless of Dynamos' intentions, the inclusion of those matches created the impression that questions were being raised about the integrity of those games.

That explains why the Premier Soccer League and the clubs mentioned sought clarification after the contents of the letter became public.

Dynamos chairman Vincent Chawonza later attempted to clarify the club's position.

"References to specific fixtures and opposing clubs were included solely because those matches form part of the allegations under investigation and should not be interpreted as implicating any opposing team or its officials," he said.

While that clarification was necessary, it does not completely remove the cloud hanging over the affected fixtures.

Match-fixing is one of the gravest offences in football. Once allegations enter the public domain, they affect not only individuals but clubs, competitions, sponsors and the reputation of the entire league.

The matter has also attracted international attention, creating an unfortunate perception that Zimbabwean football could be battling integrity issues involving one of its biggest clubs.

That is precisely why both the Premier Soccer League and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) cannot afford to let the matter quietly disappear.

The football authorities have a responsibility to ensure that the allegations are thoroughly investigated and that the outcome is made public.

If evidence exists to support Dynamos' allegations against Mangombe, then appropriate disciplinary and legal processes should follow.

If, however, the investigation finds no evidence of match manipulation, that outcome should be communicated just as publicly in order to clear the names of everyone whose reputations have been affected.

Silence would only fuel speculation.

Questions have already begun circulating among supporters about high-profile results involving Dynamos, including the club's 5-0 defeat to Scottland FC and its 2-1 loss to CAPS United. Without a definitive conclusion, rumours will continue to overshadow the credibility of Zimbabwean football.

Dynamos initiated this process by making serious allegations. The club now owes its supporters, the clubs mentioned, the Premier Soccer League and the wider football community a clear and transparent conclusion.

Whatever the findings, Zimbabwean football deserves certainty.

After the 14-day investigation period, the public should be told exactly what was established. If wrongdoing is proven, those responsible must be held accountable. If the allegations are not substantiated, those whose names have been drawn into the controversy deserve to have their reputations fully restored.

In matters as serious as alleged match manipulation, transparency is not optional—it is essential for protecting the integrity of the game.
