SA truck company to retrench 75 Zimbabwe drivers

A South African transport and logistics company, Greendoor Group, is set to retrench about 75 truck drivers as it restructures operations amid rising financial and operational pressures.

Most of the affected workers are Zimbabwean drivers employed within the company's regional trucking operations, particularly under its Cargo 2 Congo fleet, which services routes across southern Africa.

In a letter dated May 8, 2026, addressed to recruitment and fleet services agency RP Africa, the company confirmed that it would begin a permanent reduction in driver positions from June 1, 2026.

The letter, signed by Cargo 2 Cargo general manager Charl Cilliers on behalf of Greendoor Group, stated that the restructuring forms part of a broader "defleeting and restructuring initiative" aimed at cutting costs and aligning operations with reduced demand.

The company cited several challenges, including declining transport volumes, rising operational costs, and the increasing difficulty of maintaining an ageing fleet.

"As a result of the reduced fleet size, Greendoor no longer requires the current number of drivers allocated to its operations," the company said.

According to the communication, around 75 trucks are being decommissioned, leading directly to a reduction in driver positions. However, the final number of affected employees is still subject to verification.

Greendoor Group said the retrenchments are permanent, adding that it does not foresee a short- to medium-term recovery in market conditions that would justify restoring fleet capacity or staffing levels.

The company has instructed RP Africa to initiate retrenchment procedures in line with labour regulations and statutory requirements in Zimbabwe, while pledging cooperation throughout the process.

One affected driver, speaking anonymously, confirmed the development, saying workers had been formally informed of the planned job losses.

Industry observers say the retrenchments reflect wider strain in the regional transport and logistics sector, where operators are grappling with fuel costs, ageing fleets and declining cargo volumes along key southern African trade routes.

Greendoor Group, established in 2006, operates several subsidiaries including Cargo 2 Congo and other regional freight services along the North–South transport corridor.
